Why do we do the 5 S’s? – This is a systematic approach to help you develop your palate and understanding of wine’s nuances
SEE – Look at the wine in your glass to observe the color, clarity, intensity, and any sediments
SWIRL – Gently swirl the wine in your glass to release aromas and lightly aerate your wine
SMELL – Gracefully sniff the wine in your glass to detect the aromas (note descriptions consist of fruity, floral, honey, spice, herbs, oak, vanilla, earthy, tobacco, nutty, etc.)
SIP – Take a sip of the wine in your glass, focus on the flavors (notice the acidity, tannin, sweetness, dryness, crispness, body, texture, and alcohol content)
SAVOR – Reflect on the overall experience you had with your glass of wine (do you like the wine, do the components work well together, is it a balanced wine, etc.)
